Manchester United have enjoyed a long relationship with adidas as their main shirt sponsor and the Red Devils signed a 10-year extension in June 2023. The deal is reportedly worth £900 million ($1.12 billion) over the course of the 10 seasons. However, United’s current position in the Premier League has threatened their future with the German sportswear giants.

Manchester United are currently in 14th place in the Premier League standings and are only seven points clear of Ipswich Town and the relegation zone. The Telegraph has now reported that adidas have the option of ending their deal with the Red Devils early with a one-year termination period if Old Trafford sees Championship action next season.

According to the report, adidas also have the option of reducing their payout to Manchester United by 50 per cent if they are not in the Premier League during the course of that season. Additionally, the Red Devils are also docked £10m ($12.5m) every season that they fail to qualify for the Champions League. In such a case, United run the risk of only getting £35 million ($43.8m) next season from their contract with adidas.
