Wolves are finally on the verge of agreeing a compensation fee for Rui Patricio after months of negotiation with the player’s former club, Sporting Lisbon, according to the Telegraph.
What’s the story?
Sporting Lisbon’s 2017/18 season was one to forget, with the 18-time league champions finishing third and losing a cup final before an attack on their training ground by their own fans led to the rescission of a number of star players’ contracts (Telegraph).
Wolves’ summer signing of goalkeeper Rui Patricio was wrought with controversy, the Portuguese being one of nine players to cancel their contract with the Primeira Liga side. The Midlands club were therefore hopeful of landing their man for a free, but the Green and Whites understandably want compensation for the 30-year-old and the two clubs seem to have finally decided on a figure.
A fair price for Patricio?
The Telegraph believes that the goalkeeper will cost the Molineux outfit around £15m, a fraction higher than the £14.4m he is valued at by Transfermarkt. They might have been aggrieved considering they were hoping that there would be no fee, but the 76-cap Portuguese international has been a stellar signing for the Black Country side.
The 6-foot-2 custodian has kept four clean sheets in eight games and made 29 saves, the sixth most in the league, and his experience has clearly had a calming effect on a Wolves side defying expectations since being promoted from the Championship.
